The editor of the Heavenly Times sits down with his counterpart at KFL.com to discuss the 2015 draft and analyse the coming season
Considered by Kirk and Carlo as the best squad of the draft which
immediately means it isn't. Picked up Buddy and Cameron with his first
2 picks which look dangerous on paper but with long term injuries
looming in the post for both of them he'll have to rely on an injury
riddled Darling and a North Melbourne Waite whose injury rap sheet is
as long as Sandi's turf toe. Taberner, Josh Walker and Tom Lamb will be
warming the pine.
Looks to have an impressive midfield with Pendles, B.Ellis, Stokes,
Jack Steven and the most ridiculous father-son pick ever in Macrae
rounding it out
. Vince, Masten, Hartlett and Mitch Wallis more than capable.
Tacklers are solid without inducing much fear with O'Meara and Peter
Parker. 0 reserve tacklers, will be relying on the waiver wire to get
Matt Thomas with his first pick.
Always good to have an Essendon marker, can't see any reason why Hooker
won't dominate again. Has Lake as his #2 which means he'll be going to
the waiver wire early again once Brian Harris reads out his retirement
speech post round 8.
The ruck division is atrocious. Ivan Maric and Shaun Hampson will
presumably be the options considering Cameron Guthrie won't get a game
for whoever he plays for.
Left picking his rucks late-ish with Lobbe being his first option but
for some reason refused to pick Paddy Ryder. Will have to rely on Hale
and Ceglar as back up.
The Wombat has taken a page out of GOD's good book which he got for
christmas and has decided a mosquito fleet is the way forward. Breust,
L.T, J.Green, I.Smith and L.Henderson are the 8 point kickers. Scratch
that, i meant the 0.2 kickers.
There's a lot of midfield depth in the burrow this year with Sidebum,
N.Jones, Gibbs, Ward and Wines being the likely starters. His reserve
mids total an impressive 168 years between them. Malceski, Cross,
Simpson and Cooney should dominate the AFL retirement village league
this year.
Got the number one tackler from last year in Rockliff, will he be able
to go back to back in 2015 or will 2014 be an outlier tackling year?
Every stat suggests the latter. Will be a headache every week deciding
between Sloane, Wines and Ward for who will deliver him those 4.6
tackles in the second starters possie.
Andrew Mackie is solid but retirement prone but having a couple of
Essendon markers is handy (Hibberd, Gwilt)
Went bang with his first pick and didn't look back, immediately
confirming his raging premiership favourite tag for a record 8th
consecutive season with book makers around the country. Roughead +
Tippett with his first two picks being as good as anything that
happened in the draft and both will pose huge headaches for fellow
managers this season. Cream Donut and Geoffrey Garlett (welcome back,
sir) will most likely start but with Aron Blick and Sam Reid itching to
get into a big G guernsey anything is possible.
Midfield looks to be one of the more dominate line-ups in the comp with
Beams, T.Greene, Dangerfield, Hanneberry and M.Murphy a significant
threat of leather poisoning throughout the year.
A.Swallow is frothing at the mouth to get out there and tap some bums
once again, he'll be complimented by the wild card Hutchings, Ellard
and Kelly.
Harry Taylor and Ben Reid could both be top 5 markers by season end but
The Pontiff will have to look to the waiver wire to pick up a reserve
gun for support.
And we've left the best for last: THE BURGER!!! The best pick of the
year and quite possibly the best pick in KFL history, look for this bad
boy to bust out big numbers. Scotty Lycett will take at least half the
ruck this year and probably more and Big Boy Mcevoy is hawthorn's
starting ruck.
Again lived up to his reputation has the most painstaking drafter in
the KFL. GOD had to follow The Pharaoh of North Melbourne all draft
which would have had to have been the shortest straw to draw.
Picked up Nic Nat fairly early, will be interesting to see if the ruck
is split 50-50 with Scott Lycett this year or if the flying Figian will
spend most of his time up forward with Darling struggling and The
Governator having to play CHB all this year. Has Jamar as #1 back-up
which could be handy.
J.Kenndedy and T.Lynch are the core of the forward line with Petrie and
Hogan both on the wrong sides of their KFL careers rounding out the
starting positions.
Another solid midfield with J.Lewis, R.Griffin, Deledio, Dal Santo and
Montagna no doubt on their way to good numbers.
Redden could be back to his tackling best this year with the
recruitment of Beams and Christensen and the returning from injury of
Rich. Will be crucial to his season. Looks like Joel Selwood is his
only option as the second tackler so will be looking to trade fairly
early. Have your North players on stand by.
Question marks continue to linger over not only the quality of his
drafting but also the speed. A possible Vinny Tan rule might need to be
introduced next year. Picks 2, 3 and 4 could make or break this
delusional kids year with Minson, Howlett and Jenkins all struggling to
hold their place last year and performing very sporadically. Hawkins,
Jenko are the back bone of the forward line and from what i can see
he'll have to play Jake Stringer and S.Motlop as starters. Grade D-
Midfield looks pretty good on paper: Mitchell, Barlow, D.Martin,
Prestia and S.Thompson the likely round 1 line-up with Bennell, Stanton
and Coniglio as options.
Tacklers are as weak as one's staring tacklers can be 4 days after the
draft. Howlett + Coniglio with armitage and ziebell as pine warmers
Andrew Gaff once again leads his marking division this year, so we can
all look forward to a maximum of a 6 bag from that marshmellow. Waiver
wire + trades is his only way back in this position.
Vinny has stacked up on rucks this year and ordinary ones at that.
bellchambers, H-Mac and Grundy will no doubt have to play as a tackler
or marker this year. Probably round 1 actually
Surprisingly quiet on draft day, possibly due to the fact he's only now realising what an average KFL unit he really is. Anyway, it was most welcome and we hope it continues into next year. His trusty confidante Carlo the Dud has rated his squad as the 2nd best which means it's somewhere in the bottom 5. We especially enjoyed him picking Cloke with his 3rd pick knowing how much he hates the bloke he will know try to package him up for a gun forward with one of his crappy rucks. He has an all West Coast Eagles tackling department and an all Fremantle marking line-up which he must also hate. McPharlin and Johnson both injury prone and will probably go down towards the second half of the year ruining his finals hopes and Freo's. Priddis and Scooter were his only two good picks of the draft considering he was in such a prime drafting number. Midfield looks to be the weakest in the comp with an ageing and injury prone Swan and Boyd leading it with Crouch and D.Swallow rounding out the starters. Will be relying on Charlie Dixon as his number 2 forward and we all know how that trurned out for Chubby last year, will hope that Daniher can kick 10 for the year. Everything that could have gone wrong for this battler did.
Giles is GWS 2nd ruck, Longer is Saints #2 ruck and Stanley is
Geelomnng's 5th choice
Went all out on forwards with the introduction of the 8 point rule,
could back fire or prove a master stroke. Texas, Norman Gunston, The
Pest and The Black Dog is one of the best forward lines in the comp.
Solid 4 midfielders in Fyfe, Jobe, Boak and Cotchin but he'll be
looking for a 5th somewhere on his list
Has to get tackles out of Ebert or hs season is over before it starts.
T.Mitchell is the smokey of all smokeys as a starting tackler
The Governator, Flat Stanley and Murray Rance are the marking division
Went into this draft with zero prep, zero knowledge and the results
were exactly what you would have expected. In his own words "i picked a
33 year old with turf toe as my number one pick...hmmm". Also picked up
the entire Freo ruck division in Zed Clarke and J.Griffin. Stefon
Martin = Frowny Face!!
J.Elliott is his number 2 forward which won't keep many people up at
night. It seems Wingard, T.Menzel and Dawes are the other candidates
with The Commandant Schulz leading the fwd line
A reasonable midfield of Kennedy, Treeloar, GODdard, Conca and Mundy
but very ordinary reserves. Waiver wire looms
Has a couple of neither here, neither there tacklers (Zorko, Blair) to
keep him frustrated for the next 6 months. All the best with that
Chairman
Tomlinson and Frawley is probably his best line but he won't win too
many games on the back of the marking division
Been playing this fantasy business as long as Methuselah walked the
earth and it showed when he picked N.Riewdolt with his 3rd pick and Pav
with his 4th. Also picked up cousin Riewdolt with the 9th pick of the
draft which could turn out to be one the worst this season. Looks like
Vickery and Matera will be joining the starting fwd line with not much
in the tank
The midfield could be described as 'meh' with Heppell, Gray, Greenwood,
B.Harvey and Zaharakis getting round 1 jumpers for the veteran manager
McGlynn and Shiels are solid 6 a game tacklers but you won't be
expecting any bags from those two
An all St.Kilda marking line of Dempster and N.Riewdolt looks
serviceable on paper as long as they both manage to somehow stay fit
Mummy and Ryder are both quality but there's no ruck option after them
so could be dicey
Picked Jacobs who will be the best ruck in the comp this year, so
there's that. But didn't think another ruck was wise. That whole
situation = A+
Both the Downing's have gone with the mosquito fleet with Bradley
thinking Eddie Betts, Cyrus the Virus, Lecca, Cripps and Hoskin-Elliott
will be enough to win the comp. Unfortunately the KFL God's don't. I'm
not even going to mention Pods. Oops
Can't have anyone better than the son of God leading your midfield but
then it falls off dramatically. Shuey, Rosa, Cunnington and a crippled
up S.Johnson seems to be the starting line-up.
Has got Sydneys best tackler in Kieran Jack but also has a non playing
De boer and Heath Hocking which balances everything out
Westhoff (not Easton) Hurn, Fletcher are the markers
